Upgrading From A Portable Generator In Abingdon, VA

Upgrading From A Portable Generator In Abingdon, VAOne of the best ways to ensure your home and power are protected during a storm is by installing a whole home generator. We’ve installed a lot of generators in the past year, especially after the storms we had that caused so much damage in 2024. Lots of homeowners in the area were sick of losing power, and it resulted in us receiving a lot of phone calls from concerned homeowners. That was the case for this Abingdon, VA homeowner who had been using a portable generator, that just didn’t have the capacity to sustain the entire home during a blackout.

We’ve been installing generators around Smyth County, Wythville, and the surrounding areas since 2011, and know how important a whole home generator can be. There are lots of appliances in our homes that use electricity, more than ever before. A power outage can cause some real problems, and lead to some uncomfortable living conditions if the power is out for an extended period of time.

In this article, I’m going to tell you a bit more about this project, and how Complete Comfort provided a permanent solution to their power problems! If you want to talk about a generator for your home, give us a call at (276) 690-9222, or contact us online! We’d be happy to help answer any questions you may have, and get you set up with a free generator consultation!

Upgrading From A Portable Generator To A Whole Home Generator

When we went out and visited this ranch home in Abingdon, we got to meet the homeowner and let them explain to us what they were looking for. The home was around 25 years old, which isn’t very old for this area. We’ve worked in some homes that are 100 years old, so one that is a bit more updated, that uses electricity for a lot, wasn’t surprising to see they wanted backup power.

They currently had a portable generator they were using here and there. It wasn’t very big, and could only provide power to the refrigerator. With the winter approaching, they wanted to have peace of mind knowing they would have power, no matter what the weather is like outside.

They decided to upgrade their portable generator to a whole home Generac generator. There’s no need to get rid of the portable generator, as they could still use it for outside events, BBQs, and really any other time they needed a power source outside the house. They told us that they lose power a lot during the winter, and this year, they were ready to fix that problem for good.

Why Install A Generac Generator

They decided to install a Generac generator for their Abingdon Ranch home. Instead of using the portable generator to keep the food from going bad, the whole home will now be fully powered in the event of a power outage. Here are some of the things they are most excited about when it comes to their new whole home generator:

Lights & Entertainment (TV, Internet, Wifi, Etc.)

Keeping the lights on is a basic function of electricity in the home. If the power goes out, the lights are the most noticeable thing that you lose right away. Of course you can use candles, but that’s a safety concern, and obviously not as efficient as your normal lighting.

Another aspect of your home’s power is the entertainment. If you lose power, that means no TV, no Wifi, no computers. These have all become pretty integral parts of entertaining ourselves, and communicating with others. In lots of areas of our community here in Southwest Virginia, losing Wifi may mean losing the ability to speak to people outside of your house. Keeping the Wifi on keeps you connected to the outside world, and in communication with friends and family.

It’s still nice to curl up with a book by the candlelight during a power outage, but do you really want that to be your only option! If the weather is bad outside and the power is out on your block, you could instead be the home with the lights on, binge watching Netflix, or playing board games with the family. We know you won’t be worrying about finding candles to keep the lights on!

HVAC Systems

Losing power in the winter, or the summer, could lead to you becoming very uncomfortable. If the HVAC system loses power, it means no heating or cooling while the weather outside is grueling. In the winter, you can always bundle up, but that’s only ok for a bit. You could get sick and catch a cold, or worse, if you live in those conditions for too long.

Charging Capabilities & Home Appliances

If your power is out, there’s no more charging your phone, your computer, or any other device you would need to charge up. You are also going to lose the ability to use appliances around the house like your laundry machine and your dishwasher. Eventually you may run out of hot water as well if the water heater stops running. In the short term, none of these may be a big deal, but if your power is out for over a day, this could become very problematic, and lead to some frustrating days.

Generator Installation With Complete Comfort

The generator installation was fairly quick, taking less than a day. The homeowner was thrilled with how smoothly the process was, how cleanly our team worked, and with their brand new generator being ready to work so quickly! We walked them through the whole process, and showed them that they don’t need to do anything to have the generator switch on. There’s a sensor that knows when the power is out, and automatically turns the power to the generator on.

The homeowners couldn’t be happier, and have decided to recommend us to some friends! If you think a generator is something that would benefit your home, give us a call at (276) 690-9222, or contact us online
