Replacing The Hand Crank Generator
It was interesting to see an old hand crank generator in this home. We’d seen them in the past, but not in a while. While these systems do work, they aren’t as easy or as energy efficient as a new generator that is fueled by natural gas or propane.
This homeowner was starting to get older, and it was a health concern having to crank the generator every time they lost power. They wanted to stop having to work so hard, and wanted something that they could depend on keeping the entire house electrified if the power goes out.
Luckily they were right in our neighborhood of Chilhowie, and we had plenty of experience with exactly what they were looking for.
Installing A Standby Generator
The homeowner’s biggest concern was making sure they had a dependable generator that would take as little effort as possible. They wanted to make sure the whole home was taken care of for extended periods of time, just in case we see storms the way we have the previous few years.
We recommended a Generac Generator, which would be installed directly next to the house. The homeowner wouldn’t have to worry about the power going out, and wouldn’t have to do a single thing to get the new generator to kick on. This generator connects to a natural gas line, which means they don’t even have to refill a propane tank.
The way this generator works is that it senses an outage, and kicks on right away. The power is usually lost for only about 15-30 seconds. There is no switch that has to be thrown or button that needs to be pressed. It’s that simple, which is something that the homeowner was thrilled to hear about.
The whole installation took about half a day. We showed the homeowner the system, and let them know that all they really need to do is schedule annual maintenance to make sure the system is operating properly and efficiently.
Reasons To Install A Generator
Everyone has similar reasons that they want a generator for their home, and in recent years, the number of reasons has only increased. In the past it was just about keeping the tv and the lights on. Now there are a few more, considering how much we depend on electronics in our day to day lives.
Lights And TV
Keeping the lights and entertainment in your home is clearly a big reason to have a backup power solution for your home. You can always use candles, but it’s not the same, or as safe, as having the regular lighting in your home.
It’s also nice to have the television to watch during a power outage. You can read a book by candlelight, but that doesn’t leave you with a ton of options when it comes to home entertainment.
WIFI Connection
In today’s day and age, we are all on the internet a lot. When you lose power, you lose your internet connection. This is another source of home entertainment, but also can prevent you from working if you work from home.
HVAC Systems
When you lose your power, you will lose your heating and cooling as well. This is a big concern if it’s the dead of winter, or you are sweating bullets in the summer. What’s worse than being in a house with no lights or entertainment? Doing it while it’s uncomfortably hot or cold.
A generator allows you to keep your home powered and comfortable. This is especially important to homes with small children or elderly who don’t handle this extreme temperatures well.
Charging Capabilities
So many appliances we use depend on electricity, and being able to keep them all charged and operating allows you to keep your day to day routines. Most importantly, you will likely want to keep your cell phone charged, in order to keep in touch with loved ones, and also keep yourself entertained.
