Home Tips For The Summer Heat

With the summer right around the corner, now is the time to get your home ready for the next season. Here are some tasks you can take care of on your own, and a few you may want to hire a professional to help with.

Schedule Service For Your Cooling System (AC Or Heat Pump)

Having your cooling system serviced is the most important thing you can do to ensure your home is cool and comfortable during the summer heat. Just like having the oil changed in your car, when you have your air conditioner or heat pump serviced, you are making sure the system runs smoothly and efficiently.

Some of the benefits of having your air conditioner or heat pump serviced are:

  • System runs more efficiently
  • Lower energy consumption and lower energy bills
  • Lengthens system lifespan
  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Prevents breakdowns and repairs needed
  • Keeps warranty valid
  • Better home comfort

There are a bunch of different reasons to have your cooling system serviced, and overall, it’s going to make your home more comfortable while saving you money. This is something that you need to hire a professional for, so we recommend doing it before the summer, that way you have an easier time scheduling, and also enjoy the benefits of your service all summer long!

Change Your Air Filter

You should change the air filter in your HVAC system once every three months. If you have a home with pets or people with allergies and respiratory issues, you may want to change it more frequently. Your air filter catches small airborne particles like allergens, dust, mold spores, and more. Once the filter gets full, it can prevent airflow, and hurt the indoor air quality in your home.

Changing the air filter is something you can do on your own! We recommend having a few filters on hand that you can easily change at your convenience. If you aren’t sure how to change your filter, you can consult your product manual, ask your HVAC technician during a routine service, or check out a video on Youtube.

Seal Leaks In Your Home (Windows, Doors, Attics, Etc.)

Preventing the cool air from leaking out of your home, and keeping the hot air from seeping in, is a great way to improve comfort and save money. Little cracks around windows and doors are spots that are easy to seal up, but are often culprits for letting air escape your home. A bit of caulking or weather stripping can end up saving you money on energy bills, and making the space more comfortable!

If you want to take an extra step, have a professional take a look at your attic, roofing, and insulation. Having your home well sealed up can help you save money year round on cooling and heating. If you are handy, you can take care of some of this yourself, but if you need a professional, there are plenty of options that can help you get your home sealed up and improve your efficiency and comfort.

Put Out Patio Furniture And Check Propane

This is a fun task to take care of!  Get your patio furniture out of storage and set up for the summer. Check your grill out and make sure the propane tank is full. You’d rather have this all set up now than having to do it once it’s hot out and you are ready to relax! You may also want to replace some items and improve upon your setup. Doing it now gives you some time before the summer is actually here!

Why A Ductless Mini Split Is Perfect For Fall

Why A Ductless Mini Split Is Perfect For Fall

Why A Ductless Mini Split Is Perfect For FallWith Labor Day behind us, it’s time to start thinking about the next season. Labor Day is the unofficial end of Summer, even if we technically have a few more weeks. During this time period and into the fall, it’s not unusual to have days when you can use a little cooling, and nights when you want some heating. This is why we want to tell you a little more about ductless mini splits, a perfect solution to keep your space comfortable in the fall, as well as the rest of the year

We’ve been installing ductless mini splits around Southwest Virginia, and Northeastern Tennessee for about 15 years now, and our customers who use them all rave about them. From Marion and Glade Spring, and all over Smyth County, we are seeing homes and businesses that are perfect candidates for this style of heating and cooling system. They’re energy efficient, whisper quiet, and provide superior comfort compared to most heating and cooling systems.

In this article, I’ll tell you a little more about the benefits of ductless mini splits, and why they are perfect for shoulder seasons like the fall and spring. This is a year round solution that can provide both heating and cooling, and do so efficiently. If you’d like to schedule a free consultation, give us a call at (276) 690-9222, or contact us online! One of our experts would be happy to answer any questions you may have, and set you up with a free mini split consultation.

Why Is A Ductless Mini Split Great For Fall and Spring?

During the fall and the spring, you may have days that could use a little air conditioning, and some nights that could use some heat. In the past, people have just used space heaters, window air conditioners, or they’ve dealt with being slightly uncomfortable in order to avoid turning on their HVAC systems just for a brief bit of use. Luckily, now we have systems and technology that make it simple to stay comfortable without wasting energy

Here are a few of the highlights and reasons we think ductless mini splits are perfect for fall:

Ductless Mini Splits Provide Heating And Cooling

Ductless mini splits can provide both heating and cooling, unlike a lot of other HVAC solutions. If you are using window AC units, they’re only good for cooling. If you use a space heater, it can only produce heat. Instead, a ductless mini split can provide both, and do so more efficiently.

Instead of using systems that you have to install every season, then put back away when you are finished with them, these mini splits are permanently installed, and can be used all year round.

This is also perfect for these shoulder seasons because it allows you to use heating in one moment, and then cooling in the next. It doesn’t take a long time for the system to switch over, or ramp up, you simply put in the temperature you desire and it gets the room there quickly.

Ductless Mini Splits Use Variable Speed Technology

In the past, HVAC systems weren’t sophisticated enough to run at multiple speeds. It was either on or off. Now, heat pumps, mini splits, and other HVAC systems are built with variable speed technology, giving your HVAC system the capability to provide more precise temperatures and also save energy.

If you were using a traditional single-speed system, it would get the room to the temperature you are looking for, and then turn off. Then, the temperature would slowly creep higher or lower, and then the system would kick back on. In the process, there’s a lot of fluctuation with temperatures, and it can be pretty uncomfortable. It also wastes energy running at full speed off and on all day.

This variable speed system allows for more precise temperatures, no fluctuations, and saves energy, keeping the bills lower than with a traditional system.

Ductless Mini Splits Provide Zoned HVAC

One of our favorite aspects of a ductless mini split system is the zoning capabilities. This means you can run each ductless mini split unit independently of each other. Instead of setting the home’s thermostat to a certain temperature, and the whole home gets to that temperature, these mini splits can provide a different temperature for each zone. Suppose you have a mini split in your bedroom, and another in your home office. You can keep the one if your bedroom off while you work, and then once the home office is done being used, turn that one off, or run it at a lower setting.

This zoning does a few things:

  • Allows you to save energy
  • Provides more precise comfort around the house
  • Allows for different occupants to enjoy different temperatures (no more fighting over the thermostat)

Ductless Mini Splits Can Be Used All Year

Just like we said earlier, ductless mini splits can provide both heating and cooling, so they can be used all year round. But, what we didn’t mention is that these systems can also replace your current HVAC system, and provide heating during the colded winter months, and cooling during the hottest summer months.

We’ve seen these systems used as supplements for a current HVAC system if the homeowner wanted a little extra comfort, or they wanted to outfit an addition to their home with HVAC. We’ve also seen these system installed all around a home, replacing the current HVAC system completely. The point is, these systems are perfect for any time of the year, and are flexible. If you only need one to help out your current furnace or air conditioner, that’s perfect. If you want to install these all around the house and get rid of an old HVAC system, that works just fine too!
